I AM WHOLE at The Frome Independent
This month we are teaming up with YMCA Mendip & South Somerset who will be launching a new national campaign – called #IAMWHOLE – to challenge mental health stigma and raise awareness in advance of World Mental Heath Day on 10th October 2019. You find the YMCA down at the Village Green, where they will be showing visitors how crafting with friends can aid in mind and brain wellness by improving problem-solving and mindfulness and helping in the development of hand-eye coordination and spatial awareness.
#IAMWHOLE is a national anti-stigma mental health campaign developed in partnership with the NHS and YMCA. The campaign has been developed as a direct response to the mental health difficulties being experienced by children and young people throughout the UK, Ireland and around the world.
About YMCA Mendip & South Somerset….
” YMCA Mendip & South Somerset is an independent Christian local charity working mainly with young people across Mendip & South Somerset Frome and surrounding villages. Our work encompasses the varying level of need within our community and aims to provide advice, support and guidance; not only as a preventative measure of homelessness and anti-social behaviour through our youth work; but also during a person’s most vulnerable times when dealing with the many issues associated with homelessness and building a new life within the community.
The work we do is not only providing a better future for the individual that we help but also contributes towards a better community.
In Frome, we run 2 youth clubs where we provide safe, inclusive, welcoming environments for 683 young people 11-19yrs (25yrs with special needs). Our youth work ensures any young person, but particularly those at risk, receive supportive sessions which help them build self-confidence, develop new skills, understand healthy relationships and create a sense of community. We provide informal education tackling social issues such as alcohol and drug misuse, anti-social behaviour and mental health.
In the last 6 months in Frome, our café style Drop-in Centre has supported over 200 people, and our 14 accommodation units have enabled 25 people (16yrs+) to have a safe place to stay while we help them to get their lives back on track.”
