Market Trader success for Frome butcher
Local farmers and Frome Independent market traders Penleigh Farm have launched a new butchers’ shop in the heart Frome, specialising in locally reared meat and stocked with produce sourced from the monthly market.
Family-run Penleigh Farm, situated between Frome and Westbury, has been supplying meat to Frome and the surrounding area for around 10 years, as well as trading at The Frome Independent since 2013, serving sausages, bacon and other seasonal products directly to the public. Their presence at the market lead to overwhelmingly positive feedback, along with many requests and suggestions to see them in a shop of their own.
Farmer and Penleigh Director Owen Singer found that trading directly to the public at The Frome Independent was invaluable in developing a customer base and testing products.
He said “It’s fantastic advertising, you get to talk to the customer face to face on market days and really find out what works. Thanks to the market we’ve been able to attract new customers and really develop our identity as a business, and we wanted our new shop to be a reflection of that.”
Owen and his team were keen that their shop reflected Penleigh’s identity as a quality buttery but also as farmers with a commitment to local produce, so have sourced all their stock from with a very small radius of Frome.
Alongside pork and lamb from Penleigh farm, there is also game poached from around the farmland plus beef and poultry sourced from other local farmers. Owen is also working with a handpicked selection of his fellow traders at The Frome Independent, and will stock Lovett Pies, Taste Fool’s scotch eggs, Little Jack Horner’s sausage rolls and Somerset Charcuterie.
The new Penleigh Farm & Butchers shop can be found on Stony Street, Frome and is now open for business. Visitors to the Frome Independent can continue to find Penleigh’s delicious cooked products in Scott Road on Market days on the first Sunday of the month.
