Trader Profile-Scatter Jewellery

One of the best bits of running an event like The Frome Independent is seeing businesses grow on every part of their journey. This week we chatted to Frome maker Meg from Scatter Jewellery, who has been a big hit in the Catherine Hill suitcase sale, where she began trading with us as a new business last year. In our latest Q & A, Meg tells us all about her journey from art teacher to jewellery maker, the joys of market trading and how she likes to spend her days off!

Hi Meg! Tell us a bit about you and your business.

I feel a bit of a fraud calling it my business! I began making jewellery as a hobby and to make presents for my friends and family. It’s grown quite organically.

Where do you get your inspiration – what motivates you to do what you do?

I love wobbly, wonky line drawings and have always liked the idea of combining naive drawings into jewellery. After teaching art for over ten years I discovered the material I work in – jesmonite and it sparked a fantastic creative journey for me.

Why did you choose to come and trade at the Frome Independent?

It’s the best, I am fascinated by everyone trading here, I’m delighted to be part of it.

What do you like about market trading  – why not just sell online or through retail outlets?

I really like meeting the people who will wear my jewellery, and love chatting to people. It also helps me improve and refine my work, you get immediate feedback.

Tell us about your own favourite or best-selling product. How much work goes into creating it, why do you think this is your strongest product?

Earrings are fast becoming my best sellers. Last market I sold out of my little asymmetric ovals, I think it is because they are unusual and quite a statement but they are small, so a bit more subtle.

What is your favourite Frome shop, or stall to visit at The Frome Independent?

Frome Hardware, Moo and Two and Pilea Plant shop  – and I am in love with Laura Holden Studio’s playful beautiful stuffed animals.

And finally, some quick fire questions….!

Favourite book? Cats eye by Margaret Attwood

What are you listening to right now? We listen to Cerys Matthews every Sunday morning, she always plays amazing music

What are you cooking/ eating / drinking at the moment? Anything from any Anna jones book, we’ve just cooked cauliflower steaks with tallegio cheese and chilli, mmmm mm

And finally… what’s your dream day off? Swimming outdoors with my children and husband, out for dinner in the evening then home for Game of Thrones!

Thanks Meg! You’ll find Scatter Jewellery at the top of Catherine Hill on market days, or you can check out Meg’s Etsy shop here.
