Trader Profile-The Spice Sultan
After an unseasonally balmy few weeks, it’s finally feeling more like winter… We’re dreaming about warming curries on this damp Wednesday in November! We caught up with David, founder of The Spice Sultan to find out what inspired his culinary adventures.
Tell us a bit about you and your business.
Having worked as a chef and loving spice-based food, I went travelling to discover more about authentic cooking using spices. After returning from my travels to India, North Africa, and Southeast Asia I started recreating the spice blend recipes which I had discovered on my travels and packaged them with recipe cards so people could cook the same recipes at home.
Where do you get your inspiration – what motivates you to do what you do?
My inspiration comes from my mother who taught me to cook at a young age and instilled a passion for food. I’m motivated by positive customer feedback and the idea of further travels in the future. There’s more recipes to discover!
Why did you choose to come and trade at The Frome Independent?
I grew up near Frome and love the whole ethos of the market. It’s hands down the best market I’ve ever traded at, with a great atmosphere and friendly vibe between traders.
What do you like about market trading – why not just sell online or through retail outlets?
For me market trading is the best part about running my small business. It’s an opportunity for me to interact with my customers, receive feedback, and have more social contact in my working week.
Tell us about your own favourite or best-selling product.
One of my best selling products is my Moroccan Tagine with Rose Petal Harissa Recipe Kit. The Tagine spice blend is phenomenal and includes 22 different spices which are all freshly ground for optimum flavour. It’s such a complex spice blend and I’m so proud of it because it took a lot of tweaking to perfect it!
What is your favourite Frome shop, or stall to visit at The Frome Independent?
I love The Garden Cafe in Frome. It’s got a wholesome vibe and they sell high quality food ingredients and delicious homemade cakes!

Describe your dream day off.
A lazy morning at home listening to music, then out somewhere for brunch, followed by a nice countryside walk.
